Fire Hydrant Inspection, Testing & Tagging

Fire hydrant inspection, testing, and tagging is the process of inspecting, testing, servicing, and documenting fire hydrant systems to ensure they are fully operational and capable of supplying water for firefighting during an emergency.

Like other fire protection equipment, fire hydrants are maintained using inspection records and service tags or maintenance labels

What is inspected?

1. Visual Inspection

The technician checks:

  • Hydrant cabinet or enclosure is accessible and clearly identified
  • Landing valves and hydrant outlets are free from damage or corrosion
  • Hose, branch pipe, and nozzle (if stored in the cabinet) are present and in good condition
  • Isolation valves are accessible and correctly identified
  • Signage and operating instructions are visible
  • Cabinet door, locks, and hinges operate correctly
  • Service tag or maintenance label is present and current

2. Functional Testing

The technician performs operational checks such as:

  • Open and close landing valves to verify smooth operation
  • Check for leaks from valves, fittings, and pipework
  • Verify water flow and pressure
  • Conduct flow testing where required
  • Confirm hydrant outlets and couplings are in good condition
  • Ensure pumps and associated systems operate correctly (where applicable)

3. Maintenance Checks

Depending on the installation and applicable standards, servicing may include:

  • Lubricating valves and moving components
  • Replacing damaged seals, washers, hoses, or fittings
  • Pressure testing of the hydrant system
  • Inspecting pumps, booster assemblies, and water storage connections
  • Repairing leaks or damaged components
