Fire Extinguisher Inspection, Testing & Tagging (AS 1851-2012)
Fire extinguisher testing and tagging is the process of inspecting, servicing, testing, and recording the condition of portable fire extinguishers to ensure they are ready for use in an emergency.
Unlike electrical test & tag, fire extinguishers are maintained according to fire safety standards and are typically identified with a service tag or maintenance label.
What is checked during an inspection?
1. Visual Inspection
The technician checks:
- Correct extinguisher type for the hazard
- Accessible and correctly mounted
- No physical damage, dents, or corrosion
- Safety pin and tamper seal intact
- Pressure gauge in the green (where fitted)
- Hose and nozzle free from damage or blockage
- Operating instructions clearly visible
- Service tag present and up to date
2. Functional Inspection
The technician verifies:
- Weight (where applicable)
- Pressure level
- Cylinder condition
- Valve operation
- Bracket and mounting security
- Manufacturing and service dates
- Fire Extinguishers replacement if required
