Emergency Exit Light

Emergency Exit Light Testing is the inspection and functional testing of emergency lighting and illuminated exit signs to ensure they operate correctly during a power failure, allowing occupants to evacuate safely.

Unlike portable electrical equipment, emergency exit lights are generally inspected, tested, and recorded rather than “tagged”. Some organizations may attach a maintenance label or service sticker after testing.

What is inspected?

1. Visual Inspection

• Check the exit sign is clearly visible.
• Ensure the fitting is securely mounted.
• Inspect the diffuser and housing for damage.
• Verify directional arrows are correct.
• Check battery and charging indicator LED.

2. Functional Test

The tester simulates a power failure by switching off the mains supply or using the test switch.

Verify that:

• Exit sign remains illuminated.
• Emergency light operates immediately.
• Battery backup activates correctly.
• Light output is sufficient for safe evacuation.

3. Battery Discharge Test

A full-duration test confirms the battery can power the emergency light for the required period (commonly 90 minutes or as specified by local regulations).
